Fast Food Tried to Kill Me! 0

This article is all true. I have the medical bills to document it. Here is my story. And although some of it may be unique to me, when I look around I can see a lot of others may be headed for the same situation. So here is my story on the dangers of fast food. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

About 8 years ago I started an ESL company with a friend in Taipei, Taiwan. In the beginning we were super busy and I was putting in 16 hour days easily. Good nutritional practices were the last thing on my mind. And to make things worse, I am not Chinese nor could I speak, read or write the language. That really limited my food choices.

But luckily, actually very unluckily, there was a McDonald’s about two minutes from my school. So I ended up eating there three times a day sometimes. It was just convenient and I understood the food. At the time I wasn’t experimenting with Chinese food much like I do now. But more about that in another article.

Now over time I could feel my body getting worse. I was putting on weight and I was getting winded quicker. Now to be fair, I was putting in a ton of hours, I was stressed because 3 months after we starting our school SARS hit us and we couldn’t get any new customers for 2 months, and I smoked like a chimney. So there were a bunch of factors leading up to what happened.

I could feel the grease from all of the fast food I was consuming oozing out of my body everywhere. Add in the constant humidity here and soon I was having some problems with ACNE. But every month or two I’d get a pimple that would continue to swell and not go away. Twice I needed to get a topical cream to put on it so that the pimple could heal.

The third time that it happened I just didn’t have the time to go to the skin doctor again. I washed my face a few times a day and used alcohol to try and sterilize it. But nothing was working. And the pimple just wouldn’t come to a head so that it could be popped. After about 2 weeks I woke up one morning to one side of my face practically 3 times its natural size.

Of course I freaked out and finally took the time to see a doctor. My girlfriend was a pharmaceutical sales person, so she knew of a really good doctor in one of the hospitals she worked at. So off I went to get some medicine. Or so I thought!

Once the doctor saw me he immediately sat me down and did a quick exam. After that he injected me with a bunch of antibiotics. And I mean a big syringe full. He then admitted me for a day for observation and continued to inject me full of stuff through an IV drip and choke me with pills the whole time.

Basically what he told me was my pimple was actually a type of germ/bacteria that in normal circumstances would just be killed off by my body’s natural immune system. But for some reason, my immune system wasn’t keeping pace.

The reason all of this was so dangerous to me was that the pimple’s placement on my face was very close to the ear cavity. He said the bacteria could find its way into my brain through the ear cavity and cause me to die or give me serious brain damage. I thought that was a bit extreme, but later I found out everything he stated was true.

After some tests he told me that my diet was was backing up my body’s digestive system and causing my immune system to break down. Again, to be fair, he of course said the smoking and stress help to make it even worse. But he said I’d end up in the same place sooner or later whether I smoked or not.

Now you need to understand, this was 8+ years ago. This was before the movie Super Size Me! came out. When I finally was able to see that movie, I understood it at a level that I am sure a few others could as well. I was amazed at just how deadly fast food really is. And not necessarily in the long term, but short term as well.

I eat fast food maybe once every six months now. And my body is grateful for it. I still have a scar on my face where the huge pimple was finally drained by a doctor. Every so often I notice it in the mirror and it takes me back to a horrible time in my life. I just felt so horrible at the time. No energy, spark, nothing. It’s a great reminder not to end back up there again.

And if you for some strange reason have still not seen the movie Super Size Me!, go watch it. It’s a great documentary on the realities of fast food.
